What’s your thoughts on BLM movement now?

I don’t like to attach myself to the movement. I feel like that message often gets misconstrued and taken out of context. I believe that the movement means well but the message gets lost in the actions of a few. Also I have a different perspective and experience based on my upbringing. However, I hope for the best with the movement and I do stay informed.

What’s important to know?

African-American history Is American history. And there are so many reasons to celebrate. Nothing exists in a vacuum and nobody has the right to pick and choose what version of history is told. Unfortunately that hasn’t always been the case. This is why we utilize the month of February as an opportunity and reminder to educate. Educate everyone. African-American people were essential to building the foundation of our country in many ways. That is why Black History Month is a time to bring focus and appreciate key players in the growth and development of American history. There have been so many contributions throughout the decades, and even more to follow. Personally, I do not limit my learning and appreciation to only one month. I am a lifelong learner and I seek information and understanding in its truest form. No omissions.

Why is Black History month important for you?

As an African-American woman, to truly know and understand myself is to know where I have come from along with those before me. I have made the decision that it is up to me to educate myself and those around me, because that is my role in society. Self love comes with self understanding and acceptance and from those seeds we grow. We all grow.

My favorite song to skate to… that’s a tough one 😅 probably Glory Box by Portishead 💕

3. What empowers you?
I am empowered but the positive energy around me. I am very fortunate for all the beautiful souls I have in my life.

4. Biggest struggle for women and Enby?
The biggest struggle is not letting my emotions control me, but channeling them through my movement. Skating helps me do just that. And in turn I have learned to do that in other areas of my life.

5. How has skating impacted your life?
Skating is my church, my therapist, my release. It helps me to fluidly combine my other passions and and build meaningful connections socially and cognitively. It gets the creative juices going.

6. What do you people to be aware of?
I want people to be aware of how important it is to put your energy out. It’s a constant struggle for me, but I would be selfish I didn’t shine my light. The hard part is keeping the switch on and maintaining the same energy.
