1. Name?

Molly Spurgeon

2. Favourite song to skate to?

My favorite song to skate to is probably Point Breeze by Marah. They’re a Philly band that whole family has always loved, and that song has such an upbeat and fun vibe I can’t help having a good time when I’m skating to it.

3. Define beauty?

I think when something is beautiful, it commands our attention in such a way that it stops all our other thoughts. For a moment, all there is you and the beautiful thing you are experiencing. It has a unique power to remove ourself from our own body and mind, and experience a fully present moment of connection to something else. I think beauty is so deeply subjective that it’s really undefinable, but it’s anything that makes you feel that way

4. Biggest issue for women / non binary?

It might not be THE biggest problem for women & non-binary people, but lack of representation in the media is a huge issue. Not only does a diverse set of characters make something more enjoyable for a diverse audience, but it humanizes/normalizes marginalized people to those who are used to seeing them as an “other”.

5. Why do you skate?

I skate because it’s fun! Like a ridiculous amount of fun. Like I’m a child again kind of fun. It’s one of the few hobbies I’ve had that involves: moving my body, being away from a screen, meeting new people, and making me look really cool to strangers on the internet.

6. What do you want people to be aware of?

I want people to be aware of the power they have to make someone feel welcome. Starting something new is scary, and it’s really hard to fit in without someone giving you permission to be a part of that world. I want everyone who starts skating to know that they deserve just as much space at the park as anyone else, and I want every veteran skater to know they hold the power to make new people feel accepted.
